☀️ High temperatures pose major challenges for UV printing systems.

When the ambient temperature rises too high, viscosity, printhead stability, and negative pressure levels change. The result: nozzle malfunctions, missing colors, and droplet formation.

Below are four main causes and concrete solutions.

 

🔥 Altered Ink Viscosity

UV inks are designed to function optimally within a precise temperature range (typically between 20°C and 25°C).

What happens: At elevated temperatures, the ink becomes excessively fluid (viscosity decreases).

→ The consequence: The printhead can no longer effectively retain the ink. This leads to dripping, pressure fluctuations, and the formation of air bubbles in the ink lines.


🌡️ Premature Drying (Filming)

UV lamps—especially LED versions—generate significant heat. Combined with the ambient temperature, this heat accelerates the evaporation of volatile ink components.

What happens: The ink forms a microfilm or thickens directly on the printhead surface (nozzle plate) or inside the dampers before it is even ejected.

→ The consequence: Nozzles become clogged, even immediately after a cleaning cycle.


🌀 “Siphon” Effect & Unstable Negative Pressure

Many UV printers use a negative pressure system to maintain the optimal ink balance within the printhead.

What happens: Hot air expands. The thermal expansion of air in the ink tanks or ink lines alters the negative pressure levels.

→ The consequence: The ink either retracts from the printhead (causing missing colors) or, conversely, begins to drip uncontrollably onto the printing substrate.


⚙️ Printhead Overheating

Printheads generate internal heat during operation due to piezoelectric friction. If ambient temperatures are already elevated, the printhead may exceed its critical operating temperature.

→ The result: This leads to blockages or alters the size of the ejected ink droplets to such an extent that no ink is dispensed at all.

🧊 Control the Environment (Important!)

  • Room temperature below 26°C; ideal range: 22–24°C
  • Humidity: 40–60%
  • Air conditioning strongly recommended

🔧 Adjust Printhead Heaters

Many UV systems feature heaters designed for winter operation.
At a room temperature of 30°C:

→ Reduce heater temperature by 1–2°C to prevent the ink from overheating.


🧽 Increase Automatic Cleaning

  • More frequent flash purges
  • Shorter wiper intervals

→ Prevents film buildup on the nozzle plate and dampers


🚀 Perform Manual Purge Before Large Jobs

  • Short purge
  • Nozzle check

→ Stabilizes the printhead before long production runs
